Updates

Filed under: Uncategorized — yminisa @ 4:02 pm

Well, here are some updates on my life:

1) Boyfriend – The Best Is Yet To Be (not referring to him but to our path together)

2) Studies – Goodness Gracious, gg
On the other hand, we’re coming to the end of Week 12 (out of 15 weeks) so this means that soon you’ll find me living like a zombie in the library.

3) Internship – looks like Singapore Tourism Board is so adamant about employing someone with second upper honours that they rejected me and opened their application on OASIS again. DAMN. Well, anyway, I was offered an internship at People’s Association – SIGLAP Constituency. HAHA. Yes, serving the community that I live in. I hope I will be able to learn much from this internship.

4) Family – Had a family portrait taken recently, and it’s now hanging on the wall above the piano, NICE ! Brother and his family could be moving out soon, like in June… : (  I will be missing the kids so much

5) Hobbies – Have I mentioned this ? Maybe. Anyway, I went for …. a JAZZ class last monday (dance)! Wow, the feeling of dancing again is awkward. Aching the day after. And, my current hair length means that I have to either tie it up (but the fringe still gets in the way) or let it all down (and look really unkempt) – and this affects my dancing. CRAP. Well I think I will be continuing this for awhile. After a 2 -3 year hiatus, I realise that I do like dancing. Not love though.

6) God – Starting a journal now to have a sense of what I have asked God for so far and what prayers I am having faith for etc. YAY.

Bystander Effect

Filed under: Uncategorized — yminisa @ 3:06 pm

I was on my way to a psych study when I saw someone lying on the grass, looking like he was in pain. Well, it made me, instinctively, stop and think for a few seconds, what I should do. Just so happen there was another man walking behind me, so I decided to let him past and see what he would do.

Thankfully, before he could do anything, two other students went to the student lying down and they started talking and laughing. OK. So he wasnt in pain and they were prob doing some experiment.

And I carried on to my study.

Only yesterday, when Prof Evelyn Au was teaching on Bystander Apathy, did I think about that incident and wonder if it was part of the study. Coincidentally, they asked at the study if I noticed anything funny. HAHA.

Well, it was an interesting feeling no matter what.

Why do we have children?

Filed under: Uncategorized — yminisa @ 2:57 pm

Triggered by questions from the boyfriend and my gender and family class discussions, I’m intrigued by the reasons people give for having children.

Here’s some:

- They bring light and joy to the world (but what happens after they turn 10 and are not so cute suddenly?)
- To carry on the family line (retro!)
- Natural progression
- So I have someone to take care of me when i’m old
- To have grandchildren to entertain me
- Because I have no choice

Dunno… what else can you think of?
Well, I think having children is a very selfish business. At least for myself, I look forward to the joy that they bring esp in the first few years. But on deep thoughts, what after? They are a lifetime commitment. Moreover, if you think about it seriously, you really do come to the world to suffer (non-Christian speak here). You have to fulfil expectations, you have to study, you have to go through pain, sometimes joy, but simply – life is not a bed of roses! So why are you bringing that child into this world?? Plainly, it seems to me it is to bring joy to the couple that is suffering in this world.

Another thing that gets on my nerves is the fact that some people always think in terms of ‘how much is it to raise a child’ OH MY. Quite thinking like you’re buying an insurance policy! If you want it have it, if you dont just forget it! And if you keep thinking about money, there’s no end, because there are some things that you dont do and will later regret because you didnt think it was a ’sound financial decision’. pfft.

Wonder Women

Filed under: Uncategorized — yminisa @ 2:03 am

A few days ago, 8th of March 2009 to be exact, The Straits Times ran an article on the successful women in our society. To be honest, I did not really read the article, but one of my Gender & Family classmate raised an interesting point on our discussion forum.

I went to the ST Forum to take a look and found APALLING and UNIMAGINABLE comments posted. Looks like males have nothing better to do than to surf the net and look for opportunities to put down women.

Let me post some of the comments to give you a better idea:

  • Wonder women in Singapore !!! …… you got to be joking !!! …….. I will be damned to be taken in by such “statement”.made ….
I wonder why mediacorp comes up with such distasteful programme and promotion! …….I wonder why mediacorp wants to “kid” the public that such ‘women” existed? ……
Thus, if mediacorp wants such “programme” on women on air ….. get the women to enlist to National Service for 2 years first …. and then talk about “wonder women” …….
And please, MINDEF, don’t tell me that “it is not the time to call young girls at this moment” ….. afterall, enlistment acts is applicable to all citizens, regardless of their background and genders, attaining the age of 18. It is a National obligatory.
Clearly, there is a “bold” line drawn to differentiate male and female ……
  •  may call these “b.. t..hes” wonder women … of all I care ….
In my definition …. these “bi ..hes” are “opportunitist” and “cunning” ……always looking for easy way out …..and take full advantage of us … men!!

GOODNESS GRACIOUS! WAKE UP MEN !

I dont like how we say ‘old people’ like we’d never get old.

If I could…

If I could be invisible for 24 hours, what would I do?

A discussion in social psychology class resulted in this question, which made me think long and hard on what I’d do. The main point is, no one would do good because there is no identification.

For me, I think that these are a few things that I would do:

- steal flight tickets to Europe & America
- make holiday bookings for my family & friends, and register it as PAID
- steal money from the bank
- disturb the people that I dont like (come on, there are bound to be pple that you dont like too)
- visit a car showroom and drive away with a Beatle, a BMW, a Mercs, a Mini etc etc
- stand in the middle of the road (since I wont get killed anyway)
- jump down from a tall building
- enter high security areas
- grab a few bags from Kate Spade, LV, Chanel
- grab MANY shoes from On Peddar & Aldo
- the list goes on and on and on

Ya, a lot of a material things that I will take. But let’s face it, those things that are noble and value-adding, you can do on a normal day anyway. Oh yes, I will make sure that I will sleep alot the day before so I dont get tired during the 24 hours.

What would YOU do if you could be invisible for 24 hours?
