On 28th January 2009, I was crossing the road towards Parkway Parade with Cranky Caroline when we heard a loud crash. There, right in front of our eyes, an accident took place.
A Pizza Hut delivery man crashed into a MPV. The bag containing the pizza fell off his bike and rolled onto the floor. The glass of the MPV was shattered.
It was a horrifying sight for both of us. Although the delivery man didnt look like he was hurt badly, there was blood flowing from his mouth. I saw him squirmed. I saw him try to move, then stopped. On the other hand, the MPV moved to a safer location and the passenger seat door of the MPV opened and I heard screams. There were children in the car, and they were really shaken.
Bystander Apathy kicked in for 30 seconds, until I organised my thoughts and had a clear enough mind to call the ambulance. I reported the location and situation and prayed hard for the delivery man. He was still motionless.
Thank God there was a police post nearby, the policeman came out to direct the traffic and semi-checked on the guy. The fear that Caroline and I felt is hard to put into words. The accident happened so quickly and within such a short distance of us, we just thank God we are safe, albeit shivering from the fear.
The ambulance came awhile later. By that time, there were hoardes of Indian workers crowding around and being kaypos. We couldnt see a thing. I don’t know what happened to the delivery man in the end. I can only pray that he is fine.
Lord, give me courage to drive.
